Diamond Anniversary Stamps

Next year will be the 150th anniversary of the Golden Spike at Promontory Point, which means these stamps, issued for the 75th anniversary, are themselves almost 75 years old. The Union Pacific logo is flanked by locomotive 119 on the left and an E6 locomotive, used on the City of Los Angeles and City of San Francisco, on the right.

The PDF includes a brown sheet of coated paper designed to keep the stamps from unintentionally sticking to something else.

More UP Passenger Train Note Pad Sheets

Here are three more note pad sheets advertising Union Pacific trains. I’m told that the note pad these came from contained all three of these plus the three shown yesterday in rotation. Again, the Overland logo dates these to before World War II.

The image of an on-board stewardess-nurse was used on various advertising for the Challenger train and apparently served as a logo as much as anything else. UP discontinued the heavyweight Challenger in 1947 and then revived the name for a streamlined train in 1954. Continue reading

Union Pacific Passenger Train Note Pads

Each of the sheets from this note pad advertise different Union Pacific trains. The three trains advertised on these sheets all continued to operate at least until 1954. However, the Union Pacific Overland logo indicates that these pads were printed before the war.

The California poppies and typeface are reminiscent of pre-war Los Angeles Limited menus. The Los Angeles Limited was once Union Pacific’s premiere train, numbered trains 1 & 2, so it is a little surprising that it was the first of these three to be discontinued in 1954. In addition to the all-Pullman City of Los Angeles and all-coach Challenger–both of which operated on the same schedule except during the summer months–UP continued to operate a mail & express train between Chicago and Los Angeles numbered 5 & 6. Idaho-Utah Vacation Playgrounds

This 32-page booklet has 13 pages on Idaho and 13 on Utah. The inside front cover has a map of the Union Pacific system in the two states showing many branch lines that no longer exist today, including lines to Wells, NV; McCall, ID; New Meadows, ID; Park City, UT; and of course West Yellowstone.

The 26 pages of photos and text are filled with brief descriptions of individual sights and resorts with, in some cases, rates and contact information. Before these pages begin, however, a couple of opening pages are of questionable value. Page 3 has a nice, full-page photo of Idaho’s Sawtooth Mountains. “In Idaho and Utah the most striking scenic features lie inland from the main travel routes,” says a caption. “It is to these that attention is herein directed.” Attention is herein directed? Couldn’t they find a smoother way to say this? Continue reading

UP 1937 Dude Ranches

This booklet lists 67 dude ranches (less than half the number found in the UP’s 1955 dude ranches booklet) and another 40 “camps, lodges, and resorts.” The brands shown on the cover are actual brands of some of the dude ranches listed in the booklet.

The Pacific Northwest & Alaska: 1945

Although the title of this booklet includes “and Alaska,” the booklet actually gives more space to Idaho (which is part of the Northwest but not the Pacific Northwest) and Sun Valley than to Alaska. But this should be expected considering that Sun Valley was owned by the Union Pacific.

The cover shown above is the back cover; the front cover has a picture of Mt. St. Helens but is clearly not meant to be the display cover. The booklet is dated December, 1945, which suggests Union Pacific rushed it into print with the end of the war. Except for the cover photos shown above, all of the photos in the booklet are in black-and-white; within a year or two, Union Pacific would rely much more heavily on color photos for its advertising booklets.

The San Francisco Overland

UP distinguished its premiere trains with distinctive branding. This included logos: roses for the Portland Rose, poppies for the Los Angeles Limited, and a Golden Gate sunset (influenced by partner Southern Pacific’s logo) for the San Francisco Overland. They also each had distinctive, usually art decoish type faces for the name of the train.

The Overland was also distinguished by having two lounge cars, where the Los Angeles Limited and other premiere heavyweight trains had only one. This booklet describes and pictures a club car at the front of the train and a lounge car in the middle of the train. Apparently by 1941, when the booklet was issued, the Overland no longer had the observation car on the rear of the train that was mentioned in the 1929 Book of Trains. Continue reading

Copper King

In 1938, Union Pacific transferred the M-10004, which had been operating as the City of San Francisco, to City of Los Angeles service, thus increasing service on that route from five to ten times a month. Before putting the train on that route, UP extensively remodeled it, calling the revised train the LA-4. The remodel converted what had been a baggage car into a lounge-observation car known as the Copper King. Like the Frontier Shack and Little Nugget cars, the interior of this car was designed by Walt Kuhn.

The walls of the lounge were electroplated with copper, which must have given it a spectacular appearance. The windows were circular portholes fitted with rotatable polarized glass. By turning the glass, passengers could control how much sunlight entered the car. The front quarter of the car was a barber shop/valet/shower, while the rear two-thirds was a lounge with 41 seats. Between the barber shop and lounge was a small kitchen-buffet for serving beverages and snacks. Continue reading

The Little Nugget

After designing the Frontier Shack for the City of Denver, Walt Kuhn designed the lounge car for the second City of Los Angeles. Although the car and train were put into service in December, 1937, this booklet is dated November, 1938. At 4.4″x6.25″, this booklet is somewhat larger than the Frontier Shack booklet, which is 3.25″x5.9″.

Kuhn decided to make the car look like a gay ’90s bar filled with more than twenty of his own paintings of horses and clowns mixed with photographs of actors and comedians from the past. This booklet includes no pictures of the car but provides the names and very brief biographies of the people in the photographs. Except for Will Rogers, I’ve never heard of any of them, but many have Wikipedia entries. Continue reading

The Los Angeles Limited

This booklet is the same size as the ones shown in the last two days. In the mid-1930s, Union Pacific offered two types of premiere trains: daily heavyweights such as the Los Angeles Limited and Portland Rose and (usually) less-than-daily streamliners such as the City of Los Angeles and City of Portland. These booklets helped to distinguish the two different kinds of services.
