Instead, the revived Oriental Limited is the train to use by passengers wanting to visit the park. The S-2 steam locomotive shown in this brochure will soon be replaced by Diesels, but passengers to Glacier will continue to ride heavyweight cars until 1951.

The photograph is looking down California Street to Grant Avenue. As shown in the Google street view below, several of the buildings in the foreground still exist but much of the background has changed. The tallest building in the 1949 photo is visible as one of middling height in the modern photo. The California Street Cablecar was apparently under repair when Google took the photo, but a Panoramio photo taken from almost exactly the same angle as the menu shows a cable car being tailgated by a Mini Cooper.

Spokane-Montana Tour

In 1928, the Spokane Chamber of Commerce and Spokane Merchant’s Association sponsored a “good-will tour of Montana” for Spokane business men. The tour left Spokane on July 23 on the Oriental Limited, arriving the next morning in Kalispell, where the group spent the day presumably with the local chamber of commerce. They then took a short train ride to Columbia Falls and changed trains to go to Glacier Park where they spent less than two-and-one-half hours, after dark, examining the Glacier Park Hotel.

Close to midnight, they boarded a train to Great Falls, arriving at 7 am. After spending the morning there, they took a train to Helena, where they spent the night. One more Great Northern train in the middle of the day took them to Butte. After spending the afternoon and night in Butte, they rode the Milwaukee Road to Missoula, arriving shortly after noon. After spending the rest of the day in Missoula, they took an overnight back to Spokane, again on the Milwaukee Road.

First, page 2 mentions the Empire Builder but not the Oriental Limited, which means it was published after March 31, 1931, when the latter train was cancelled. (Magazine ads as late as March, 1931 still mentioned the Oriental Limited.) Second, the mountain goat in the railroad’s logo is the old forward-facing goat; the more-recent side-facing silhouette started appearing on GN’s 1936 timetables.

American Wonderland

The Great Northern, Northern Pacific, and Burlington railways jointly published this travel booklet in 1925. Focused on the Northwest, the centerfold map features the three railroads’ routes across Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Washington, and Oregon. Naturally, the SP&S route is also shown even though that railway is not listed in the booklet, probably because easterners and midwesterners could buy tickets from the Burlington or one of the other railroads, but not the SP&S.

Diary of an Amateur Explorer

In 1911, the year after Congress created Glacier National Park, Great Northern invited eight reporters to go on a tour of the park along with an artist and a “travelogue lecturer.” Four of the reporters were from Chicago, three from the Twin Cities, and one was from Seattle. Soon after, the Great Northern published this booklet by W.O. Chapman, who represented the Chicago Evening Post on the tour.

Chapman writes in a humorous style, naming his fellow tourists “the General, the Sergeant, the Poet Lariat, Colonel Casey, the Adjutant, the Circuit Rider, the Rabbit Rider, the Artist, the Broker, the Wrecker, the Aeroplanist, Professor Film, Old Seattle, and Doc Cook.” His account is filled with tales of his companions’ nervousness about the wilderness. “‘On our way down, we saw a black bear in the trail,’ said the Sergeant. . . ‘Possibly that accounts,’ suggested the Wrecker, ‘for the speed with which you came into camp.'”

Carefree Vacations in 1939

Although issued by the Great Northern, this brochure was aimed at California tourists and the four suggested tours would involve almost as much travel on the Southern Pacific and, in two cases, Canadian railroads as the Great Northern. Tour #2, to Yellowstone and Glacier, takes Californians to Yellowstone over the Union Pacific, not GN’s sometimes partner, sometimes rival Northern Pacific. From Yellowstone, tour members would take the Burlington to Billings and GN to Glacier.

Scenic Route West

Dated 1940 (but first issued, with a different color cover, at least a couple of years earlier), this brochure is an update of The Scenic Northwest. Alas, in the intervening decade, the Great Northern either forgot about its historical expeditions or decided they wouldn’t attract tourists, as the 1940 brochure does not picture a single monument erected in 1925 and 1926, nor does it include routes of the early explorers on the centerfold map or mention anything about the region’s history.

The brochure does devote one page to dude ranches, another to Glacier Park, and beautiful scenery in Idaho, Oregon, and Washington. But it also has individual pages picturing North Dakota farming, Montana mining, and logging in Washington state, perhaps to show there were plenty of jobs in the Northwest. Also pictured are four different dams–Fort Peck in Montana, Grand Coulee and Long Lake in Washington, and Bonneville between Oregon and Washington. Dams, of course, were considered a symbol of a country’s might and a source of seemingly unlimited, cheap electrical power. Coming between the Depression and the war, which was already being fought in Europe, these sights were probably considered reassuring.
