Here is an example of the third generation of Union Pacific tour books, one with the map-on-cover. What were they thinking? This is a 1927 update of yesterday’s booklet, and it would establish a pattern that Union Pacific would follow for at least a decade: 7″x10″ booklets made of particularly stiff paper, with covers color-keyed to their subject and embossed with shiny gold printing, and containing (in some cases) several heavily saturated color photos on the inside. In this case, there are color images–they look like paintings but are probably hand-colored photos–of Yosemite Falls, Santa Barbara Mission, gardens in Southern California, Zion, and Bryce Canyon national parks.

This being the start of a new year, I’m introducing the first of a number of tour books published by the Union Pacific Railroad. The railroad published similar guides over the years for California, Colorado, the Pacific Northwest and Alaska, Yellowstone, and Zion/Bryce/Grand Canyon national parks. It also had “summer tours” booklets that described and priced escorted tours to the various destinations.

I have four different series of tour books. This one, which I call the “painted-cover” series, with black-and-white photos inside and colorful covers, came out in the early 1920s. Later in the 1920s came the “embossed-cover” series, which featured deeply textured covers and, in some cases, color photos inside. In the 1930s came the “maps-on-cover” series, which had a stylized map of each region on the covers. Finally, after the war, came the “color-photo” series, which had color cover photos and color throughout the booklets.

Issued in 1957, this 18″x32″ map highlights Great Northern routes in red and Burlington routes in thick black. The Rio Grande and Western Pacific get medium-thick black lines. All other railroads are shown with thin black lines, though it might be possible to distinguish main lines as being slightly thicker than branch lines.

Locomotive Builder’s Card

This is the General Motors builder’s card for the Great Northern E-7s built to haul the 1947 streamlined Empire Builder. GM delivered 13 of these locomotives to the GN starting in 1945. The painting on the card is by GM illustrator Ben Dedek.

Oddly, this card shows the paint scheme of the locomotive as it was used in service pulling the streamlined Empire Builder. What’s odd about this is that the locomotives were delivered with a very different paint scheme on the nose, as shown in the painting by General Motors illustrator Harry Bockewitz below. GN left them in those colors while pulling the heavyweight Empire Builder, but then repainted them as shown on the card for the streamlined train. Note also the locomotive as delivered had only one headlight, instead of the two shown on the card. This shows that the card was printed in 1947 or later, not in 1945 when the locomotives were first delivered.
