Cascade Postcards

This was a set of ten different postcards, but I only have five of the set. The cards are linen and say nothing about a streamlined Shasta Daylight, so I would guess they were issued either right before or right after World War II.

SP Streamliner-Era Postcards

These postcards all show Southern Pacific streamlined trains. None appear to have been issued by SP, but most were probably issued with the railroad’s cooperation to be sold at newstands in various SP train stations.

Although this card says it was published by Western Publishing & Novelty, it also says it is a C-T Colortone. CurtTeich was probably the printer while Western Novelty was the distributor. It has a number on the front, 8A-B3002, and the “8A” indicates it was published in 1938.

SP Pre-Streamliner Era Postcards

These postcards all appear to have been issued before 1920, and all but one of them from before 1915. One of cards is Southern Pacific issue, while the others were probably issued with the cooperation of the railroad.

This card has a divided back, which means it was issued in 1907 or later, and a Southern Pacific logo on the back. The large white space on the front suggests it was issued right after the Postal Service allowed people to write messages on the back; prior to 1907, many postcards came with space on the front for writing messages. We’ve previously seen later postcards of the Wawona tree, which–contrary to this card–was probably about 2,300 years old when it fell in 1969.

SP 1966 Timetable

Like other condensed timetables presented in the last couple of weeks, this one is just six panels long. But by 1966 those six panels display all of SP’s trains on all its routes: Sunset-Golden State take two panels; Coast, Overland, and Shasta one each; and San Joaquin gets the half-panel next to the cover that is shown below.

The West Coast of Mexico train is summarized on one of the Sunset-Golden State pages, even though that train was by this time run by the National Railroad of Mexico. The San Joaquin half-page actually shows that a Santa Fe bus from Bakersfield to Los Angeles is a faster alternative to Southern Pacific’s train, not an admission a railroad would make if it were seriously interested in maintaining the passenger business.

Portland to Los Angeles in 1961

On the day after Christmas in 1960, Mr. & Mrs. Paul Munsell and a third person took a trip from Portland to Los Angeles, via Martinez, and back. This ticket envelope says they left Portland at 7:45 am, which would mean the Shasta Daylight. In Martinez they had a three-hour layover before taking the Owl to Los Angeles.

This is the story told by this ticket envelope and accompanying tickets (only one of which I’ve reproduced here as the other two are pretty similar). This envelope closely resembles a 1967 envelope shown here previously, except that the paint schemes on the locomotives in the illustration were changed to the SP “Bloody Nose” design in the 1967 version.

SP 1952 System Timetable

The 56-page 1947 timetable had shrunk to 48 pages by 1952. Pages for the Sunset-Golden State routes had gone from 14 to 13; the Overland Route from 5 to 4; the Shasta Route from 7 to 5; and California routes from 12 to 10.

The West Coast of Mexico and Pacific Electric, which each rated a page in 1947, were combined into one page in 1952. The other page was saved by eliminating a full-page ad.

SP 1949 Coast Route Timetable

Here’s the Coast Route edition of the six-panel condensed timetable we’ve previously seen. Unlike the Sunset-Golden State edition, which also lists the West Coast of Mexico route, or the Shasta Route edition, which also summarized the Coast Route trains, this one has nothing but California trains, with three pages for the San Francisco-Los Angeles Coast Route and two pages for the Oakland-Los Angeles San Joaquin route.

The San Joaquin Route had three trains daily between Los Angeles and Oakland–the San Joaquin Daylight, the overnight Owl, and an unnamed local–plus two between Los Angeles and Sacramento, the Sacramento Daylight and the West Coast, which continued on to Portland. With this timetable, SP cancelled the Noon Daylight and put the same equipment to work on the all-coach, overnight Starlight. The other trains on the Coast Route were the Morning Daylight (a strange name with the Noon Daylight gone), the overnight Lark, and an unnamed, late-night, local train.

SP 1947 System Timetable

This 56-page timetable should be a complete record of Southern Pacific passenger trains in 1947. Fourteen pages cover the Sunset/Golden State routes; the Overland Route requires just five pages; seven pages for the Shasta Route; twelve pages for California routes (including Northwestern Pacific); and one for the West Coast of Mexico. A page for Pacific Electric lines, which SP would own for a few more years, lists the departure times from end terminals on each route.

Like so many timetables, the cover shown above is the back cover. The front cover is an ad for a “unique new Pullman service” in which Pullman car passengers connecting in New Orleans between the Piedmont Limited and Sunset Limited westbound and Sunset Limited and Crescent Limited eastbound could leave their beds in their sleeping cars while taking a few hours to explore New Orleans. The westbound trains had just a four-hour layover in the morning, but the eastbound trains allowed passengers to spend nearly seven hours in the evening, giving time to explore the French Quarter and have dinner.

Just why SP thought young girls in America might become a queen is left unexplained.
