UP 1940 Calendar

According to Utah Rails, 1940 was the first year in which Union Pacific produced calendars with scenic photos for each month. Initially, each page was 10 inches by 18 inches; in 1945, they grew to 12.5 inches by 23 inches. This calendar is six sheets of paper comb-bound together, allowing for one page for every month of the year.

Howard Fogg Prints

One of the ways Union Pacific used the Howard Fogg paintings it had commissioned for the Golden Spike Centennial in 1969 was to publish this set of suitable-for-framing prints on heavy paper. Each page is 18″ by 23″, and the images on each page are a little over 14″ by 17″.

Black & White Old Faithful Menu

Here is the seventh and, as far as I can tell, last of the Union Pacific black & white menus. As previously noted, all of the other menus in this series featured national parks except one that had Boulder Dam. The photo on the back of this menu, not surprisingly, shows a scene in Grand Teton National Park.

Here are two more menus used by American Legionnaires going home from the 1938 convention in Los Angeles. We’ve seen both of these covers before, but these come with a couple of extras.

Black & White Yosemite Menu

Here is the sixth in Union Pacific’s series of black & white photograph menus, the first five being Bryce, Zion, Rocky Mountain, and Rainier national parks plus Boulder Dam. This particular menu was used for a group of American Legionnaires going home from the 1938 national convention in Los Angeles.

We’ve previously seen this photo of Sleeping Beauty’s Castle on a City of Portland dinner menu. This dinner menu was for the City of Los Angeles. Both are from 1971, and the meal selections are only a little different: steak, salmon, chicken, and ham on this menu; steak, trout, turkey, and veal on the City of Portland menu.

Starting as early as 1947, Union Pacific used a font called Coronet to decorate its menus. Designed in 1937, this font will be familiar to I Love Lucy fans as it was used in the opening and closing credits of that show–but Union Pacific used it first. At least in the late 1960s through 1971, City of Portland menus used it just for the name of the train, but City of Los Angeles menus also used it for the list of table d’hôte meals, perhaps underscoring that train’s status as UP’s premiere domeliner.

We’ve seen both of these menu covers before, but the menus on the inside are different from what we’ve seen before (though identical to one another). In the last couple of years before Amtrak, Union Pacific dining car menus for the City of Portland and City of Los Angeles all featured the charcoal-broiled sirloin steak, plus one seafood entrée, one poultry, and another red meat. Usually, the seafood was Utah brook trout or Columbia River salmon.

These two menus, however, offered Pacific Coast swordfish, a slightly more exotic seafood item. The poultry and ham entrées were also slightly different; instead of fried chicken, the chicken was “breast of spring chicken supreme,” which usually means chicken breast service with the drumstick and skin. Columbia River Lunch Card

Unlike other railroads that were formed from mergers of pioneer railroads, the Union Pacific started out as the Union Pacific in 1864, so as of 1969 it had few predecessor railroads. One exception was the Oregon Steam Navigation Company, which operated steamboats on the Columbia River and a small portage railroad, shown in this picture, to get around the Cascade Rapids of the Columbia, now covered by the reservoir behind Bonneville Dam. Eventually, the company replaced steamboats with a rail line from Portland to Spokane, and it came under UP’s control in 1898.

We’ve seen Howard Fogg’s portrayal of the Golden Spike ceremony on a breakfast menu folder. This is the same painting on a breakfast menu card. Like most of the breakfast and lunch menus I’ve shown in the last couple of days, this one is dated August 1970 (one of the Sunrise menus was dated September 1970).
