Here’s a 1945 photo portfolio issued by National Color Press, which — like others from that publisher — means the photos are really black-and-white and colored by hand. The colors are ghastly, with too much purple and yellow on many of the pictures.

The photo below showing Olvera Street, a “bit of old Mexico” a short distance from Los Angeles Union Station, illustrates the problems. The Lark was Southern Pacific’s overnight counterpart to the Coast Daylight, leaving San Francisco and Los Angeles at 9 pm each evening for a 9 am arrival in Los Angeles or San Francisco. This 1944 menu from Bill Hough’s collection is one of Southern Pacific’s series of color photo menus printed on rather flimsy paper. All of the ones previously shown here are dated between 1940 and 1950 and, like this one, most don’t specify the name of a train.

This particular booklet stresses Southern Pacific’s long-term “four great scenic routes” to the Pacific Coast theme. The Overland, Golden State, and Shasta routes each get two pages, while four pages are devoted to the Sunset Route, which was the least scenic but the only one entirely owned by Southern Pacific. Even the Shasta Route, as shown on the centerfold map, used other railroads north of Portland.

Desert View Watchtower Menu

This lunch menu was used at Fred Harvey’s Bright Angel Lodge on the south rim of the Grand Canyon. Bright Angel was a moderately-priced alternative to the famous El Tovar Hotel. Pictured on the cover is the Desert View Watchtower, located about 24 miles east of the hotels.

I happened to visit the Grand Canyon late last year, and when I was at the watchtower a woman expressed disappointment that it wasn’t, as it appears to be, a genuine Indian ruin. I told her I felt that way when I first visited, but now I appreciated that it was designed by Mary Colter, one of America’s first female architects.
