Yellowstone-Teton Postcards

These five postcards date from the late 1910s to the 1960s. The first shows someone feeding a black bear, behavior that the Park Service actively discourages today. The person feeding the bear, though apparently a woman, is wearing pants and a tie, suggesting the group has also been horseback riding.

This postcard has the UP “system” logo and a white border, both of which date it to 1915 to 1930. However, based on the clothing styles, I would guess it is from the early part of that period. The back of the card says Yellowstone is “best reached by the Union Pacific via West Yellowstone Station, directly on the park boundary.” Northern Pacific, whose Gardiner station was directly on the park’s northern boundary, would naturally dispute that claim.

Sun Valley Diary

This elaborate, comb-bound booklet says that it is “Compliments of the Union Pacific Railroad,” suggesting it was given to Sun Valley Lodge guests, or maybe VIPs. Printed in February, 1954–too late for the railroad to give it to customers as Christmas gifts–the booklet includes calendars for 1954, 1955, and 1956 in the back. Diary pages list days of the month without specifying weekdays, so the book–which is more of an appointment calendar than a diary–could be used in any year.

Each month begins with a page briefly describing the type of activities that would take place in Sun Valley during that month, followed by a page with a full-color photo or photos. Four more pages provide room for eight days each with space for morning, afternoon, and evening entries. In addition to the three annual calendars, the last few pages provide room for “notes.”

Along the Union Pacific: 1953

This booklet is pretty similar to the 1950 edition that was presented here a couple of years ago. The biggest difference appears to be that the front cover is actually on the front instead of the back as it was in 1950.

Both booklets start out with a brief history of the railroad illustrated by stills from the 1939 Cecil B. DeMille movie, Union Pacific. Both that movie and John Ford’s Stagecoach were based on stories by Oregon writer Ernest Haybox. While he was apparently a good writer, the story that went into the movie had little to do with the reality of building the first transcontinental railroad.

UP 1951 Annual Report

Before World War II, most corporation annual reports were dry recitations of data, often using the same wording from year to year with only the numbers changing. After the war, new printing techniques combined with a desire to improve public relations led most companies to prepare more visually appealing reports, with color photos on the cover and color or black-and-white photos inside. This oversized–9″x11″–Union Pacific report is an example.

My collection includes just a few annual reports. However, another source of annual reports is the Hathi Trust. This institution has most, if not all, annual reports from 1922 and before for the Union Pacific, Great Northern, and several other railroads. Unfortunately, unless you are associated with an institution that is a partner of the Hathi Trust, you can only download the reports one page at a time, which can be tedious.

A Brief History

This booklet claims to be a brief history of the Union Pacific, but it is mostly a history of the construction of the railroad and the pounding of the famous gold spike. Sixteen pages deal with everything up to the last spike, while just six cover everything that happened after that. Everything between 1869 and Edward Harriman’s 1898 takeover, including the company’s two bankruptcies, is glossed over by just two short paragraphs.

The front cover says this publication was first released in 1946 and that this is the 1951 edition. The back cover says that one quarter million copies had been issued in that five-year period.

January, 1951 Union Pacific Timetable

This timetable is not a lot different from the September, 1951 edition shown here two-and-one-half years ago. One addition to the later timetable is the City of St. Louis to Los Angeles. That train began operating in 1946, but only as far west as Cheyenne, where its Los Angeles-bound cars were added to the Utahn, which originated in Omaha. The railroad acquired enough streamlined passenger cars to make the City of St. Louis a through train to Los Angeles in April, 1951.

As a result, the Utahn, trains 3 & 4, was terminated and no longer on the September, 1951, timetable. Its place was taken by a train called the Idahoan, trains 11 & 12, which in the January timetable just went from Portland to Green River, where it was added to the Utahn, but in September the train continued under its own name and numbers all the way to Omaha. Thus, there was no real reduction in mainline train service, just a rerouting and renumbering of trains.

Sun Valley 1950

We’ve seen a 1949 Sun Valley booklet that has almost nothing in common with this one. The difference, which is not indicated by any text on the covers, is that this one focuses on summer activities while the 1949 one focuses on winter sports.

Other than a couple of graphics showing room accommodations, the only things the booklets have in common are the size and number of pages. Both have fold-out back covers, but the maps inside those covers are completely different, as are almost all graphics in the booklets and even the fonts. It is almost as if they were designed in completely different eras, but the winter one was published in September, 1949, while the summer one was issued just five months later in February, 1950.

1952 City of Los Angeles

We’ve already seen a 1950 edition of this booklet. Two years later the booklet was barely changed, though photographs on pages 6 and 7 were replaced, perhaps to reflect changes in the train’s observation cars. Both editions note that the observation-lounge car was found only “on some units of the City of Los Angeles.”

If there is an intentional color scheme associated with these booklets, this yellow one must reflect Southern California’s near-perpetual sunlight. Click image to download a 4.4-MB PDF of this 20-page booklet.

The booklets both advertise the Little Nugget and Hollywood lounge cars (pictured in this post), the latter of which featured polarized, port-hole windows that could be rotated to reduce incoming sunlight when crossing the Nevada and California deserts. Until the dome diners, which were decorated slightly differently on the City of Portland and City of Los Angeles trains, these were perhaps the last specialized cars used on Union Pacific passenger trains.

1952 City of San Francisco

If the color covers of these booklets advertising Union Pacific streamliners are meant to have local significance, it’s hard to imagine what this grey cover denotes unless it is the clouds and fog that are often found covering San Francisco Bay. This particular booklet is much like the one for the City of Portland, including many of the same photos.

The early, twice-weekly City of San Francisco had a special lounge car called the Nob Hill, but when Union Pacific added more trains to make it a daily service, it used generic lounge cars. A picture of a lounge car on page 8 may be of the Nob Hill, as a painting of San Francisco from Nob Hill adorns the front of the bar. But the booklet says nothing about that unique car and instead just mentions the friendly atmosphere of the lounge.
