Passenger Station Paint Guide

Union Pacific issued this paint guide for passenger and freight stations in 1956. The guide includes color chips and references to Pittsburgh paint numbers. Exteriors were to be off-white with Kentucky green trim and wainscoting. Station agents were given a choice of interior colors: sunny yellow, seafoam green, blossom pink (more of a beige), and como blue.

Most of the paint chips seem to have retained their colors, but I question the chip representing Kentucky green as it appears almost black in my scan. As shown below, at least one of the two images of Kentucky green (Pittsburgh paint number 1-338) I can find on line is much lighter.

Sun Valley Wednesday Dinner Menu

This Sun Valley menu doesn’t have a date, but judging from the prices it is from the late 1960s. It also doesn’t mention Union Pacific anywhere except in tiny letters for the photo credit, which would confirm it is from after 1964 when UP sold the Sun Valley resort. As a result, this isn’t quite railroad memorabilia. Update: Actually, these menus go back to the early 1950s with no mention of UP other than the photo credit, so this was likely from before UP sold Sun Valley.

The menu purports to have an a la carte section and a “Wednesday dinner menu” (which suggests that the lodge rotated menus by day of the week). In fact, both sections offer nearly complete meals, with “soup, vegetable, potato, salad, bread, [and] beverage.” EntrĂ©es include sirloin steak, filet mignon, chicken, lamb chops, trout, calf sweetbreads, pork chops, prime rib, and crab. There must not have been many vegetarian skiers in those days. Appetizers and dessert were both extra.

City of Portland Bridge Score Pad

Except for the Winged Streamliner logo in place of a rose, this score pad is nearly identical to one we’ve seen for the Portland Rose. Both of them are nearly identical to one we’ve seen for the Great Northern, which uses a “Two Great Trains” logo indicating it was used on both the Empire Builder and Western Star.

The similarities suggest that both railroads went to the same printer for these score pads. Most likely, the printer had a standard format and just add railroad, hotel, or other logos, plus one page of advertising, to each print jog.

Streamliner Beverage Menu

This is one of the cutest beverage menus used on a railroad. When folded, the front and back show the silhouette of a Union Pacific streamliner. When unfolded and rotated 90 degrees, the menu forms the silhouette of a cocktail shaker. The beverage side also seems to be coated with a thin sheet of aluminum or aluminum-like paper to remind passengers of the aluminum train bodies, which (after 60 or so years) makes that side look somewhat crumpled.

Although the streamliner on the cover doesn’t have an elevated cab, its paint scheme and front grill otherwise resemble the M-10003 through M-10006. These were delivered in 1936 and lasted until 1953, so the undated menu could have been from any time in that period. The prices–30 cents for a martini, as little as 60 cents for a half-bottle of California wine–suggest this particular edition probably came out before the war.

1930 Yosemite Breakfast Menu

Here’s a menu in what I call the art nouveau series featuring the same lithograph of Yosemite Falls that was previously seen on a 1935 menu in what I call the modern series. The two menus use different black-and-white photos on the back, but the same three paragraphs describing the park.

150 Apple Recipes

Published in 1925, this 40-page booklet makes some outlandish claims about the health benefits of apples, stating they make good mouthwash as well as toothpaste and that they “play an active and important part in the elimination of poisonous materials.” The booklet rates 23 varieties of apples grown in the Pacific Northwest for both eating and cooking.

A couple of the recipes call for “a cup of homemade yeast,” which as near as I can tell refers to something like sourdough starter. Most of the other recipes, however, can be made with ingredients found on anyone’s cooking shelves today.

The Columbia River Gorge

Today’s postcards all depict the streamliner City of Portland in the Columbia River Gorge east of Portland. Although the City of Los Angeles was technically Union Pacific’s premiere train, and no doubt carried more passengers, the railroad featured the Portland train in more of its scenic photos, possibly because the Columbia River Gorge was much more photogenic than the desert traversed by the Los Angles route.

This postcard wasn’t issued by the railroad, but it is so attractive I included it anyway. It is also a puzzle, as the elevated-cab locomotive shown was found only on the M-10003 to M-10006 trains, and Utah rails says these locomotives were never used on the City of Portland. The M-10004 train set was used on the Portland train between 1941 and 1947, but with E-3 locomotives in place of the elevated cabs. There may have been exceptions, as the elevated cabs survived until 1953, but this may also be a figment of the illustrator’s imagination.

Pacific Northwest Postcards

The first card today appears to date from the pre-World War I era when most cards were printed in Germany. The divided back indicates it is from 1907 or later. It was not railroad-issued, but prominently mentions the Oregon, Washington Railroad & Navigation Company, which became a Union Pacific subsidiary in 1910. So the card is probably from 1907-1910.

The Oneonta Bluffs shown in the photo surround Oneonta Gorge, a narrow canyon headed by a waterfall. In 1917, the Columbia River Highway pierced the bluff with a tunnel. In 1948, the railroad moved away from the bluff and the Oregon Highway Department moved the highway to where the railroad tracks are shown in the photo in order to avoid the cost of maintaining the tunnel. The tunnel was reopened in 2009 for pedestrians and cyclists.

Southern California Postcards

These cards date from the 1910s to the 1950s or 1960s. The first is probably from the late 1910s. There is more than one Japanese garden in Pasadena, but the one shown here is probably the Huntington garden (which is actually in San Marino, next-door to Pasadena), which opened in 1912.

Northern California Postcards

All but one, or possibly two, of these postcards appear to date from the 1910s or 1920s. The first one has an almost completely unrecognizable photograph of San Francisco. While many of the buildings in the picture may still exist, many are gone and the view today is quite different.
