The front cover illustration is by an artist named Albert H. Winkler. We’ve previously seen this cover on a 1929 edition of the Burlington Escorted Tours booklet. While this one is 48 pages and includes half-tone photos, the 1929 version was expanded to 68 pages and some of the photos were colorized.

The cover of this menu shows a barely recognizable North Coast Limited somewhere in Montana, probably near Homestake or Bozeman Pass. A close-up view makes it apparent that an artist has slightly enhanced the domes to make them stand out in the photo. The NP used a lot of black-and-white photos by Ron Nixon, but I can’t find this photo in the Ron Nixon archive, so perhaps this one was taken by someone else.

Like the May, 1964 timetable, this one uses just two colors of ink (red and black) on the cover instead of the three (red, green, and black) that had been used in previous editions. The North Coast Limited is portrayed in a nighttime scene through, perhaps, the North Dakota badlands.

NP May 1964 Timetable

After three years of using this illustration, this would be the penultimate Northern Pacific timetable to feature the close-up view of a dome car on the cover. I don’t have an October, 1963 timetable, which used this same cover, but as we will see in the next few days, 1964 timetable covers would look very different.
