Canadian National October 1967 Timetable

Despite the surge in ridership that took place during Expo ’67, which ended the day this timetable went into effect, CN cut numerous trains, allowing it to reduce the size of this timetable from 68 pages to 52. The previous timetable had about 80 tables of CN train routes, while this one has only about 50.

As if to make up for the loss of those trains, many of the timetable pages are printed in two colors, red and blue, instead of the black print found in previous timetables. Reflecting the loss of those trains (and saving two pages), CN simplified its map and put it back in the centerfold. The simplified map only shows “principal passenger lines” instead of all CN main lines and branches.

In this timetable, the Super Continental consisted of one coach and three sleepers each from Montreal and Toronto that go all the way to Vancouver, plus a diner and lounge car from Toronto to Vancouver and various cars going shorter distances. Ten cars, plus baggage and express, went from Capreol to Vancouver and no Sceneramic Lounge or dome-sleepers are listed for any part of the route.

The Panorama fared even worse, being effectively split at Winnipeg into two trains with the same name but different numbers. Sleeping cars and coaches went from Montreal and Toronto to Winnipeg and other sleeping cars and coaches went between Winnipeg and Vancouver, but none went through.

The only consolation is that a Sceneramic Lounge car was included in the Winnipeg-Vancouver Panorama, but that train was only six cars long, plus a seventh car between Saskatoon and Vancouver. Amazingly, three of those cars were non-revenue cars, leading to a pretty high ratio of non-revenue to revenue seats.

The Ocean Limited appear to have lost its Sky-Top observation car. Such cars are shown in the April 1965 timetable for both the Ocean Limited and the Scotian as “8 bedroom lounge-sleepers” and in the October 1966 and April 1967 timetables as “8 bedroom Skyview lounges.” However, today’s timetable lists the car for the Scotian only. It is curious that CN relegated its unique feature cars, the Sceneramic and Skyview cars, to secondary trains on both routes.
