The City of Denver‘s Frontier Shack

This booklet is the same size as the Union Pacific name-train booklets such as the one presented yesterday. Though it is printed on a completely different kind of paper, that is probably meant to recall faded papers from the nineteenth century. UP also printed a similar booklet about the Little Nugget and Copper King cars on the City of Los Angeles and may have printed ones about the Hollywood Club car on the same train.

All four of these cars were designed by Walt Kuhn, an artist who introduced Americans to modern art at the 1913 Armory Show. Marie Harriman, wife of UP chair Averell Harriman, had purchased some of Kuhn’s paintings, and Harriman asked Kuhn to help design these cars as well as some of the interior decorations at Sun Valley.

While there was only one each of the Copper King, Hollywood Club, and Little Nugget cars, there were two Frontier Shacks, one for each direction of the daily train between Chicago and Denver. One of the cars was dedicated to General Grant, with his portrait in a prominent location, while the other was dedicated to Buffalo Bill. After lining the walls and ceilings with unfinished wood to give the rustic appearance of a frontier bar, Kuhn decorated each car with a variety of genuine antiques dating from 1865 to 1890, including photos, newspaper stories, and hardware such as a rifle issued to Union Pacific construction crews in the late 1860s.

Unfortunately, the booklet’s photos are rather muddy due to the dark-colored paper. I’ve previously shown a hand-colored postcard of the car that is reproduced above.

In addition, the Kuhn family donated his papers to the Smithsonian, which has posted some of them on line. These include photos and other images from the Frontier Shack, including the cover of this booklet, which Kuhn himself apparently designed.

One of the photos in the booklet is a detail of this photo found in the Kuhn family files.

The Smithsonian site by default downloads photos with a maximum resolution of 1300 pixels in the long direction. However, I found that at least some of the images can be downloaded in a higher resolution by replacing the “1300” at the end of the URL with “2000.” I haven’t found any images in the Kuhn files that will download at more than 2000 pixels in the long direction.

This booklet doesn’t have a date, but the train was introduced in 1936 and the schedule mentioned in the back of the booklet appears to closely match timetables from that period.
