Here’s another in the series of Sunset Limited menus used by the Southern Pacific in the early 1960s. This menu is from the Ira Silverman menu collection at Northwestern University, and I’m including it here so I can display as complete a collection from this series as possible.

Audubon Dining Car Breakfast Menu

For most of its history of passenger service, the longest ride anyone could take on the Southern Pacific was the Sunset Limited, so the railroad considered this its number 1 train even though it probably didn’t attract as many riders as, say, the Coast Daylights. This is one of a series of classy menus used exclusively on that train in the late 1950s and early 1960s, of which we’ve already seen one that shows a cartoon cowboy on the cover.

University of Portland Breakfast Menu

The University of Portland football team had a terrible season in 1939, winning just one game. That game took place in San Francisco and was quite possibly the occasion for this menu, as only one other game would have required an overnight trip on the Southern Pacific. The University of Portland, sometimes called UP, is located in the University Park (UP) neighborhood overlooking the Albina Yards of the Union Pacific (UP) railroad.

Southern Pacific Silhouette Menus

These menus aren’t from my collection, but they fill out the series of menus whose front covers have silhouettes showing some scene or icon along Southern Pacific lines. The first page of the menus is 5 inches wide while the second is 5-1/2 inches, allowing a colored strip with the name of the meal to appear when folded and unfolded. All three menus shown here are for lunch.

The first menu shows a columned house with a magnolia flower in the foreground, undoubtedly meant to represent a Southern manor estate or plantation. Today this might be considered in poor taste but in the 1930s, the era of Gone with the Wind, it was considered the height of luxury. This menu is from the New York Public Library collection. Fremont Addressing the Indians Menu

Yesterday, I wrote that most of the Forty-Niner menu covers used images taken from the heart of Southern Pacific territory, so of course today would be the exception: an engraving of Colonel Fremont speaking with Indians at Fort Laramie, Wyoming. The signature on this picture is difficult to read, and I must not be the only one who thinks so as I can find several copies of it on the web yet none identify the artist. The earliest use I can find of the engraving is from an 1899 book on the history of the United States, and it doesn’t identify the artist either.

Update: Thanks to Streamliner Memories reader Chon Clayton for identifying the artist: the ink drawing was by George de Forest Brush (1855-1941). Born in Tennessee, Brush studied art in New York and Paris, then traveled to Wyoming where he made many drawings of Indians, some of which he later turned into paintings. Continue reading

Although Union Pacific tended to have finer menus than the Southern Pacific, I suspect the Forty-Niner menus were designed primarily by Southern Pacific. Most feature scenes taken from the heart of Southern Pacific territory, and Union Pacific seemed to defer to SP for the selection of photos and images used on City of San Francisco and San Francisco Overland menus, even to the point of featuring a Southern Pacific locomotive on the latter. Sutter’s Mill Forty-Niner Menu

The engraving on today’s cover is by Hugo Nahl, who was born in Germany in 1833 and, along with his brother Charles, were considered California’s first major artists. Their parents must have been the first hippies: Charles was the son of Georg and Henriette Nahl. Henriette split from Wilhelm and had an affair with his cousin, Alexander Nahl. Then she moved in with Georg’s brother, Wilhelm Nahl, who fathered Hugo — yet Hugo treated Alexander as his “real,” though not biological, father.
